Fedora Core 6 Zod successfully installed.

Look for tips and tutorials on how to set up your Fedora Core

I also suggest this very detailed page by Stanton Finley.

Fedora Core 5: Additional software installed for typical desktop machine

Following the guidelines from the above pages I installed the following software after the initial installation. Remember to choose only one set of repos: Either RPMS and dries or livna. These two sets mutually exclude each other. I still have to check out the new and updated livna repository. An interesting tool for installation called the fedora frog can help with easy installation but I think it takes all the fun of doing it yourself.

System tools

  • yumex: Nice GUI for the yum software updater
  • firefox and thunderbird: The best web browser and email client
  • truetype fonts
  • numlockx: Turn numlock on by default
  • xscreensavers
  • ethereal (tcpdump GUI)=Wireshark: GUI to record and analyse package traffic
  • kmod-nvidia (Remember to reinstall after kernel update (yum -y --enablerepo livna update kmod-nvidia)
  • VMware Player: Virtualization. Great tool
  • zd1211 and wpa_supplicant (use wext as driver for zd1211): For wireless and wpa
  • Gparted: GUI for disk partitioning.
  • samba: Share your files on a network with windows machines

Multimedia extensions

  • totem-xine (this gives you also video thumbnails preview)
  • realplayer
  • gstreamer-plugins-ugly
  • flash plugin (use macromedia repo for this)
  • amarok (use alsa and configure realplayer as engine): Great Music Player
  • xine: Great Video Player
  • xine-libs
  • xine-skins
  • all2006...codecs (from mplayer website)
  • amule
  • the gimp: Graphics program in Photoshop style
  • Kuickshow (nice for slideshows of your pictures)
  • k3b: CD/DVD recorder. MP3 Encoding has to be installed in addition.
  • streamtuner: Record webstreams

Development

  • jdk
  • eclipse: Programming platform
  • Quanta Plus: HTML Editor

Since Fedora Core 6 (Zod) was released on the 24th october, I have to see what of the above is still needed. Check back for some shared experience
